As Ye Would that Men Should Do to You: Luke 6:31-36

27-36. But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy tunic also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? For sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? For sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? For sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the sons of the MostHigh; for He is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. The Apostles were about to be sent out to preach and many persecutors and plotters awaited them. If the Apostles were fearful and dismayed by persecution, they might want to protect themselves from their persecutors by keeping silent and not teaching. If that happened, the radiant sun of the Gospel would be extinguished. In anticipation of this, the Lord exhorts the Apostles not to give way to defensive measures against their enemies, but instead bravely to endure all things, even insults and murderous plots. This is what He Himself did on the Cross, saying, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. [Lk.23:34] To prove to the Apostles that this commandment to love ones enemies is possible to keep, He then says, "What you want to be done to you, do the same to others; and be to others that kind of person you want others to be to you." If you want your enemies to be hard, unfeeling, and angry towards you, then be the same yourself to them. But if you want them to be kind and compassionate towards you, and not to remember wrongs, do not think that it is impossible for you yourself to be the same towards them. Do you see this natural law which is written in our hearts? That is why the Lord also said, “In those days I will surely put My laws into their mind, and write them on their hearts.” [Jer. 38:33] Then He adds another compelling reason to keep this commandment: if you love those who love you, you are like the sinners and the Gentiles; but if you love those who do evil to you, you are like God, Who is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Which do you desire—to be like sinners or to be like God? Do you see the divine teaching? First He persuaded you by means of the natural law: what you want to be done to you, do to others. Then He persuades you with the result and the reward—He promises that you will become like God.

Преподобный Роман Сладкопевец
14-го октября (1-го по старому стилю), вместе с праздником Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы, Церковь отмечает память преподобного Романа Сладкопевца, который тесно связан с Константинополем, где позднее и произошло событие Покрова Богородицы.
Преподобный Роман жил во второй половине V-го века и был родом из Сирии. С ранней юности он вел благочестивую жизнь и служил Богу. Сперва он был пономарем (т.е. церковным сторожем и прислужником) в одной из церквей города Бейрута, а затем исполнял то же послушание в Константинополе. Здесь он проводил жизнь в посте и молитве, часто проводя на молитве целую ночь. Позже он был назначен пономарем при великолепном храме Св. Софии, который являлся главным cобором Константинополя. Святой Роман не знал грамоты, но был очень усерден в доброделании, за что его очень полюбил тогдашний патриарх константинопольский Евфимий. Видя как св. Роман трудится в храме и с каким усердием проходит свое послушание, патриарх стал ценить его наравне с клириками, т.е. чтецами и певцами. Однако клирики стали роптать на патриарха, говоря: «невежду ты поставил наравне с нами!» Они возненавидели преп. Романа и стали чинить ему козни.
Однажды, в сочельник Рождества Христова, когда в церковь пришел царь, клирики схватили преп. Романа, который в это время зажигал лампады, и потащили его на амвон, говоря: «Ты получаешь равную плату с нами, – так пой же, как и мы, на амвоне хвалебную песнь Богу». Они поступили так по зависти, желая посрамить св. Романа, т.к. они знали, что он безграмотный, не знает Священного Писания чтобы суметь составить богослужебную песнь, да и петь не умеет. Претерпев такое унижение при царе и при всем народе, преп. Роман почувствовал стыд и горько плакал. По окончании службы, когда все вышли из церкви, он упал на колени перед иконой Пресвятой Богородицы, и долго со слезами молился. После этого св. Роман пошел домой и от сильной печали сразу заснул. И вот во сне ему явилась Пресвятая Богородица, утешение всех скорбящих, держа в руке небольшой свиток пергамента, и сказала св. Роману: «Открой уста!» Когда св. Роман открыл свои уста, Владычица вложила в них свиток и повелела проглотить его. Св. Роман проглотил свиток и тотчас проснулся. Сердце его было наполнено неизреченной сладости и духовной радости, а в уме он почувствовал понимание грамоты. В одно мгновение его ум наполнился великой премудрости, и он стал благодарить Владычицу за то, что Она так мгновенно даровала ему такие знания, каких он не мог бы постичь в течение многих лет.
Наступил час всенощного бдения, и св. Роман, радуясь той благодати, которую ему даровала Пресвятая Дева, пошел в церковь. Когда нужно было воспеть песнопение в честь праздника, св. Роман взошел на амвон и запел сладким голосом песнь, которую он сложил в своем уме: «Дева днесь пресущественнаго раждает, и земля вертеп неприступному приносит; ангели с пастырьми славословят, волсви же со звездою путешествуют: нас бо ради родися Отроча младо, Превечный Бог». (Это песнопение и по сей день является кондаком праздника Рождества Христова.)
Все молящиеся в храме удивлялись и услаждались пением св. Романа, особенно вникая в смысл песнопения. Когда же он окончил свою песнь, патриарх спросил, – откуда у него такая премудрость? Тогда св. Роман открыто рассказал всем о происшедшем с ним чуде и прославил благодать Пресвятой Девы. Слыша это, оскорбившие его клирики устыдились и, покаявшись, упали к ногам св. Романа, прося у него прощения. Патриарх тотчас же поставил св. Романа диаконом, и из уст его премудрость потекла как река, а те, кто раньше смеялся над его безграмотностью, теперь сами должны были у него учиться.
Преп. Роман составил более тысячи кондаков и икосов (т.е. песнопений в честь праздников и святых, описывающих суть праздника) на Господские и Богородичные праздники и в память многих святых. Церковь присвоила ему имя «Сладкопевца» и признала его самым лучшим песнописцем, как по богатству мыслей содержащихся в его песнопениях, так и по их поэтичности, глубине чувства и возвышенности языка. Святой Роман также считается покровителем церковных хоров и певчих.
