The recent meeting of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Moscow Patriarchate chaired by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II in Moscow heard a report by His Eminence Metropolitan Yuvenaly of Krutitsa and Kolomenks, President of the Synodal Commission on the Canonization of Saints, on materials received by that Commission regarding the glorification of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia who suffered in various dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church, and on materials on the veneration of Bishop Antony (Smirnitsky, 1773-1846) of Voronezh and of Archbishop John (Maximovich, 1896-1966) of Shanghai

The report of His Eminence Metropolitan Yuvenaly of Krutitsa and Kolomensk on the participation of the delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate in the funeral of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

Background:

On the morning of 3/16 March, 2008, the day of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus of Eastern America and New York, departed to the Lord at the age of 80.

During a recess from the meeting of the Holy Synod on April 15, its members prayed for the repose of the archpastors of the Russian Orthodox Church who had died since the last session of the Synod.
