Pre-Lenten Personal Checklist & Preliminary Lenten Resources

Pre-Lenten Personal Checklist & Preliminary Lenten Resources

Are you ready for the beginning of Great Lent? Here is a checklist.

  1. The meat and dairy in your house are (or about to be) used up.
  2. Prepare to make thorough confession of sins to be made early in Lent.
  3. Get a blessing from your priest about any adaptations to the fasting rules for Lent.
  4. Select Lenten reading material and (ideally) get it blessed by your priest in advance.
  5. Set a plan for charitable giving.
  6. Arrange time off with employer so that you (and your family) can attend the primary Holy Week services and Pascha. Plan to attend the special Lenten services, particularly during the 1st week of the Fast (Clean Week) and to attend the Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts as often as possible during Lent.
  7. Ask forgiveness of anyone with whom you have quarreled.
  8. Inquire with your priest about a daily Lenten prayer rule.

NATIVITY EPISTLE OF HIS EMINENCE NICHOLAS, METROPOLITAN OF EASTERN AMERICA & NEW YORK, FIRST HIERARCH OF THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OUTSIDE OF RUSSIA

Eminent Brother-Archpastors, Reverend Fathers,
Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

GREETINGS WITH THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST!

In these days of great joy, the thoughts of the archpastors, pastors, monastics, parishioners, and faithful of the churches and monasteries of our dioceses, scattered like God’s wheat over the vast earth, meet in the meek Bethlehem cave, in the semi-darkness of which was lit the unquenchable Light of the world ‒ our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God! Noetically gathering with all of you in the modest cave near Bethlehem, and kneeling down before the poor manger of the Divine Infant and His Most Pure Mother, I join my prayers to yours and implore God the Word Incarnate to grant His Church grace-filled mercies and blessed success in Her ministry, and to all Orthodox peoples speedy deliverance from fratricidal war and the restoration of justice and peace, that peace of which the angelic choir sang over the city of David on that holy night of the Nativity!

As the Biblical book, “The Wisdom of Sirach” narrates: “The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom, making peace and perfect health to flourish; both which are the gifts of God: and it enlargeth their rejoicing that love Him” (Sirach 1:18). It is the fear of God ‒ that is, sensing the Divine presence in our lives and walking reverently before God, fearing to grieve Him through sin ‒ that leads to peace; for “the fear of the Lord, as this Old Testament sage writes, “is honour, and glory, and gladness, and a crown of rejoicing. The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart, and giveth joy, and gladness, and a long life” (Sirach 1:11-12). Other types of fear give rise to all kinds of ailments, hatred, enmity, divisions, and ill will, but the fear of God promises health, joy, and longevity. This is why it is so important for us to work on our spiritual lives, to remember God, His presence among us and participation in our lives. We must stop neglecting our Christian and Church duties, and instead return to the roots of our faith and hope in God, Who has always, as can be seen from our history, helped us to acquire this peace. “Let us make our souls beautiful, and we shall be amiable one to another,” writes the Holy Hierarch John Chrysostom.

Celebrating these holy days when the Lord revealed Himself to the world, and feeling His breath on earth, let us remember the sick, the lonely, and the poor, refugees and displaced persons, our persecuted and suffering brothers and sisters in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Let us remember the need always to sincerely pray for them and sacrificially to help them to the best of our strength and ability. With a moderate celebration, let us not forget to stop and hear with our hearts and understand with our minds that we are living in a time of the visitation of the Lord. He visits us not only in our present joy, but also in the trials surrounding us. And blessed is he who meets and spends these festive days fully armed with Christian virtues and spiritual vigor!

Entering the New Year, I am very happy to announce the celebration this year of the 75th anniversary of the Holy Trinity Theological Seminary, founded at the monastery of the same name in Jordanville (New York, USA) by the well-known head of the Pochaev printing brotherhood, Archbishop Vitaly (Maximenko; 1873-1960). In this regard, I urge everyone to take advantage of the opportunity once again to take an interest in the unique history of the Russian Church Abroad and reflect on the great personalities who assisted in the founding of this seminary, in the education and nurturing of generations of fine pastors, who worthily carried out the work of God in the difficult conditions of the Diaspora. It is gratifying now to see serious and conscientious professors, numerous students and young clergymen, graduates of the seminary, together with their older brethren, nourishing the flock of Christ. For all of this let us give thanks to Christ the Chief Shepherd, Who bestows His blessing on us! We thankfully remember all those who have labored in the improvement and establishment of our spiritual school! We wish the present teachers and students bountiful success for the glory of God and the good of the Church!

Once again congratulating all on the feast of the Nativity of Christ, I prayerfully wish everyone good health, strength of spirit, and the help of God, so that the rays of this bright celebration may illumine the first days of the New Year of 2023 and warm our hearts.

With love in Christ,

UKRAINE – Urgent Crisis Appeal (ROCOR’s Fund for Assistance)

Dear Brethren & Friends of St Elizabeth’s,
As I mentioned in the announcements after liturgy last Sunday, here is a trustworthy church organization collecting funds to help those innocent victims suffering in Ukraine. As a reminder, ROCOR is a worldwide church whose members consist of Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Moldovans, and converts from the lands where the church finds herself (not forgetting Georgians, Serbians, Bulgarians, and Romanians). ROCOR’s stance is for peace. We pray for this at every divine service and we offer special prayers at liturgy for peace in Ukraine to prevail. I ask all of you to pray for peace in your daily prayers and, if you are blessed with the means, to contribute to ROCOR’s Fund for Assistance linked below.
With much love in Christ,
Fr Mark

PS FWIW, I have been out and about today in the area and it does seem that most of the snow has already melted away and the streets were dry for the most part.

Sunday, January 16, 2022 – Liturgy Cancelled This Morning – Inclement Weather Concerns

Dear Brethren & Friends of St Elizabeth’s,
I have been reviewing the weather this morning (as I am listening to the freezing rain here in my part of Red Bank) and if it’s to get worse, it’s projected to happen between 8am – 10am. Considering the weather and travel advisories, we are going to exercise an abundance of caution and cancel our church services this morning. Please stay home, stay safe, and be sure to say your prayers.
With much love in Christ,
Fr Mark

A Few Notes for Bright Week and the Paschal Season

A Few Notes for Bright Week and the Paschal Season
By Archpriest Mark Mancuso

  • We greet one another during the entire Paschal season (which lasts 40 days) with the words: “Christ is risen!” and the response to the greeting is: “Indeed, He is risen!”
  • During Bright Week, the Holy Doors and the Deacons’ doors of the iconostasis remain open symbolizing the empty tomb of our Master and Savior: Christ is risen!
  • During Bright Week, our prayers in church and at home are sung and not read as we sing all week the feast of the risen Christ: Christ is risen!
  • During Bright Week, our morning and evening prayers are replaced by the singing of the short service of the Hours of Pascha (see your prayer books): Christ is risen!
  • During Bright Week, we do not read from the psalter at home or in church for the prophecies have been fulfilled: Christ is risen!
  • During Bright Week, there is no fasting as we are at feast with the Bridegroom who processes forth from the tomb: Christ is risen!
  • During the entire Paschal season and extending to Pentecost there is no prostrating or kneeling permitted in church or at home for we stand with the resurrected Christ: Christ is risen!
  • During the Paschal season we begin all of our prayers at home and in church by singing the troparion of Pascha: “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!”
  • During the Paschal season and extending to Pentecost, we do not pray “O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth…” for the Comforter comes on Pentecost. Christ is risen!
  • And most important of all: “A Pascha worthy of all honor has dawned for us. Pascha! Let us embrace each other joyously!…This is the day of resurrection. Let us be illumined by the feast. Let us embrace each other. Let us call ‘Brother’ even those who hate us, and forgive all by the resurrection, and so let us cry: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!” “And unto us He has given eternal life. Let us worship His resurrection on the third day!”
